How Your Old Eyeglasses Can Give Others Sight
What's the best thing about getting new eyeglasses?? Being able to give someone else the ability to see clearly!
For over 150 million people, putting on glasses/contacts each morning to have clear vision is an unknown reality. For many in impoverished nations, a pair of glasses to correct common refractive errors (ex. nearsightedness/farsightedness) is a luxury that few families can afford. As a result, everyday activities including one's ability to work and go to school are negatively impacted.
The solution? Your old pair of eyeglasses! Each year an estimated 4 million pairs of eyeglasses are thrown away in the U.S. - perfectly good glasses that either have an expired prescription or are simply unwanted/out of style. Thankfully, a number of organizations have taken an initiative to not only recycle these unwanted glasses, but also supply them to those around the world who otherwise wouldn't be able to afford them.
MOST Ministries began this mission over 40 years ago and has since collected and distributed over 143,000 eyeglasses to those in need. What separates MOST Ministries from other organizations however is that they not only seek to help people see physically, but also to address those individual's spiritual needs through short term mission projects. The glasses that people send in to them are tested, cleaned, and packaged and are then sent out with the mission teams. These teams provide free eye clinics where patients eyes are tested and fitted with the correct lenses.
This year MOST Ministries will be sending eyeglass mission teams to Belize, Panama, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Guatemala, Peru, Honduras, South Africa, Kenya, and Ghana.
If you would like to donate your old eyeglasses to their cause you can mail them to:
